A brief history
“The Alley” opened to traffic in February of 1968, over 50 years ago. It was constructed as a 78 mile (that’s 3 marathons FYI) toll road to connect the Naples/Ft Myers area to Ft Lauderdale area. It was originally slated to be a two lane road, but engineering studies made it clear a four-lane highway was needed.
The AAA is credited with naming the road. Many residents and organizations were not in favor of the initial plans, believing it would be not useful for automobile traffic, and it would just be an “alley for alligators”.
